Marion County Timeline
1763 – John Beall settles on Buffalo Creek.
1770 – John Ice settled at the forks of the Buffalo.
1774 – Dunmore’s War
1776 – The town of Pleasantville becomes the first legal town in Virgina west of the Allegheny Mountains.
1786 – Robert Rutherford has the town of Mannington surveyed.
1814 – Boaz Fleming begins circulating a petition to form a new county.
1820 – Middletown (now Fairmont) established.
1814 – Boaz Fleming begins efforts to create a new county, to be named Madison County. 1820 – Middletown chartered
1837 – A Post Office is established at Rivesville (formerly Pleasantville).
1842 – Marion County formed.
1843 – The name of Middletown is changed to Fairmont.
1868 – Fairmont State Normal School established.
1876 – Fire destroys much of Fairmont’s business district.
1899 – Fairmont enlarged to include West Fairmont and Palatine.
