BARNESVILLE HISTORY
At the beginning…
In 1763, John Beall, a Maryland school teacher, settled and taught school on Buffalo Creek. The small settlement that grew up around it was called Buffalo Station, Damascus Mills, and later Barnsville. The first post office in what is now Fairmont was located in Barnsville. Barnesville was incorporated in 1906, though the surname of the family it was named after was spelled Barns. William Meredith was Mayor, and W. A. Wilson was the Recorder. In 1913, Barnesville became a part of the City of Fairmont.
